Birkenhead and Northcote

The Shore Action team has led the Kaipātiki Local Board for the last three years and has delivered an unprecedented number of projects, initiatives and events for our community, including:

  • Completed the Birkenhead Town Centre upgrade.
  • Supported Northcote Town Centre redevelopment, Awataha Greenway connection, realignment of Cadness Reserve and new pocket parks.
  • Completed the Birkenhead War Memorial Park Masterplan; secured funding for grandstand replacement.
  • Led the response to the Rawene Carpark slip.
  • Fought the unsuitable Zion Rd and Tizard Rd developments that were in breach of the Unitary Plan.
  • Saved Rosie Bolt Reserve from being sold.
  • Supported upgrade of Greenslade Reserve (2019/20).
  • Installed full-coverage shade sail over playground at Little Shoal Bay Reserve.
  • Built new heritage-themed toilet at Jean Sampson Reserve.
  • Secured repair of Northcote Wharf (were willing to contribute up to $2 million for upgrade to all-weather wharf, but AT chose like-for-like repair).
  • Track upgrades at Chelsea Estate Heritage Park, Kauri Glen Reserve and Le Roys Bush Reserve, to help prevent kauri dieback.
  • New path and bridge from Colonial Road to Chelsea Sugar (construction 2020).
  • Track and path upgrades planned for Chatswood Reserve and Tuff Crater Reserve.
  • Brought back Movies in Parks at Birkenhead War Memorial Park.
  • Fought and prevented freedom camping at Little Shoal Bay Reserve.
  • Industrial pollution prevention programme in Birkenhead Town Centre to help protect our waterways.
  • Protested AT extending Onewa Road T3 endtime from 9am to 10am; Lobbied AT to increase time of Onewa Road clearway.
  • New path at Halls Beach Reserve.
  • Installing bicycle repair station at Onepoto Domain and Birkenhead War Memorial Park (October 2019).
  • Funded heritage information panels and part-funded owl sculpture at Kaimataara ō Wai Manawa.
  • Sealed the Rotary Grove (Northcote Tennis) carpark and renewed three carparks at Onewa Domain.
  • Commissioned two plans for Little Shoal Bay - a coastal assessment and asset plan (due to flooding).
  • New playgrounds at Birkenhead Library (funded), Heath Reserve (funded), Jean Sampson Reserve (funded) and Portsea Place (funded).
  • Funded “SLOW” markings at pedestrian crossings outside Birkenhead School, Chelsea School and Northcote Intermediate School.
